Anju Prajapati/Rampur: Farmer Saddiq of Rampur says that he has planted about 700 guava trees of L-49 and Golden varieties in his field. He says that the biggest specialty of both these varieties is that they are less prone to insects and the taste is such that it automatically creates demand in the market. He says that after about two years of planting the trees, the trees started bearing fruits. In the beginning the fruits were less, but as the trees became stronger the yield also increased.
Farmer Saddiq says that once a guava tree is ready, it provides income for many years. According to his experience, once planted, guava trees give continuous yield for about seven years. He told that if water, fertilizer and mild medicines are given at the right time, then the trees remain in good condition and fruits also come in abundance.
The guava trees in Saddiq’s orchard are now in full production. According to the farmer, on an average 4 to 5 quintals of guava is produced from one tree. For this reason his garden is giving good income. He says that guava cultivation requires hard work, but its benefits last for a long time. Regarding the season of guava, Saddiq says that the crop is available twice a year. The first harvest comes in the rainy season and the second in winter. According to him, guava grown in winter is sweeter and more durable. Therefore its price is also better in the market.
Saddiq’s goods are being supplied to Delhi, Haldwani, Moradabad and Bareilly. Traders themselves come to collect guavas from his orchard. Because the quality is good and the weight is also available in full.
He says that about Rs 10,000 is spent every six months on the maintenance of the garden. This includes the cost of fertilizer, water and essential medicines. On the profit side, he said that in comparison to this, he gets a profit of up to lakhs of rupees. At present the price of guava in the market is around Rs 80 per kg. Due to which the income becomes stronger.
Saddiq says that guava cultivation is good for those farmers. Those who want long term earnings with less risk. If the right variety is chosen and the farmer himself pays attention to the farm, then the guava orchard can handle both the household expenses and savings for many years to come.
