Rishikesh: On December 12, Uttarakhand is once again going to face severe cold, cold wave and dense fog. There is no major relief in the weather today, rather the chill that has been going on for the last few days is likely to increase further. The combination of icy wind, cold temperature and humidity from morning till late night can trouble people throughout the day. There are chances of cloudy sky in many districts, due to which sunlight will be weak and cold will be felt more. Light snowfall is also possible in the hilly districts, while dense fog in the plains can make the start of the day difficult.
According to information received from the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature in the plains is expected to be between 3°C–6°C in the morning. In areas like Haridwar, Dehradun, Rishikesh and Kashipur, fog will be dense in the morning, due to which visibility may come down to 50–200 meters. This situation can affect traffic on both roads and highways. The wind speed will be 10–15 km/h in the morning, but due to wind chill the temperature will feel 2–3 degrees lower. On the other hand, in hilly districts the temperature can remain between –2°C to 2°C. There may be a situation of freezing of water or formation of frost layer at some places in Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh.
The weather will become slightly stable in the afternoon, but the cold will not subside. The maximum temperature in the plains can reach 14°C–17°C, while in the hilly areas it will remain only 6°C–10°C. There is a possibility of cloudy sky, due to which the sunlight will feel weak and cold. Strong winds will continue in the afternoon also, which will not allow the temperature to rise. If cloud activity increases, light rain or snowfall may occur in some hilly areas.
By evening the cold will become more intense. Wind speed may increase and the temperature will again start falling rapidly. Night temperature can reach 3°C–5°C in plain areas and –3°C to 0°C in hilly areas. In areas where there will be fog and humidity throughout the day, there will be a risk of frost formation. Visibility can be extremely poor at night, making travel difficult on both highways and ghat routes.
