West Champaran: Winter time brings many risks for cattle farmers. There are many such problems like seasonal diseases, lack of diet, feeling cold etc. The cattle have to deal with it, but it has a negative impact on the pockets of the farmers. Before you too have to face this problem, today we are giving you information about some such techniques of animal husbandry in winter. By following this, cattle farmers can not only protect their cattle from health related problems, but can also increase milk production by keeping their health better. Animal scientist Dr. Bhushan, working at the Agricultural Science Center located in Narkatiaganj block of the district, says that cattle farmers should mainly keep three things in mind during winter.
First: Maintenance
The living space of the cattle should be covered on all sides, so that they get relief from cold winds. It is especially important to protect the calves from cold. If you keep them tied under a shelter in an open place, then keep in mind that it is necessary to make a boundary with jute sack or any other thing. Not only this, you can also cover them with coconut sack to protect them from cold winds.
If you keep animals in a shed, it would be best to install an electric heater in it. This will provide them warmth and will protect them from seasonal diseases. Keep in mind that the meter should be installed above the reach of the animal. Apart from this solution, you can also light a fire of cow dung around the shed. This will provide them with heat as per their need. Yes, there must be enough space for smoke to escape from the shed, otherwise the animals may suffocate and there can be a big danger.
Second: Diet Management
Diet management is more important in winter than in summer. Be it human or cattle, it is essential to keep the body warm in this season. Diet plays an important role in maintaining it. To keep the body warm and produce adequate milk, it is necessary to give green grass like berseem, jowar, maize, lucerne etc. to the cattle. Keep in mind that only proper quantity of these in the form of diet can keep them healthy. Excessive green fodder can also spoil their health.
Third: prevention of diseases
Dr. Bhushan explains that cattle are more at risk of diseases in winter. Mainly the possibility of diseases like pneumonia, foot-and-mouth disease and infection in the respiratory system becomes stronger. To prevent this, parents must get their animals vaccinated against FMD. Although the appropriate time for vaccination is in the month of October only, animals can be vaccinated even at present. Keep in mind that before this they must be given creamy insecticide.
