Cold attack alert! Delhi-NCR, UP-Punjab will tremble for 7 days due to western disturbance

Season News: The weather has become fierce in North India. The latest prediction of the weather department has further increased the concern of the people. Due to the combined effect of active western disturbances, strong subtropical western jet stream and cyclonic circulation, rain and snowfall will intensify in the hilly states. Whereas in the plains, fog, cold days and cold wave will increase the problems of the people. The next seven days from Delhi-NCR to Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are going to be full of cold.

This situation is not limited to just increasing cold. There are also indications of visibility falling below 50 metres, air and rail traffic being affected and day temperatures falling below normal. According to meteorologists, this cold attack will proceed in a phased manner. First snow in the mountains, then dense fog and cold days in the plains.

Why did the weather change?

The subtropical western jet stream is very active over North India. Whose core wind speed is said to be more than 100 knots. Along with this, a series of western disturbances in the lower and middle troposphere and cyclonic circulation over South India are pulling cold air on a large scale. This is the reason why moisture is increasing in the mountains and cold, stagnant air is getting trapped in the plains and giving rise to fog.

How will western disturbance affect

As soon as Western Disturbance reaches the Himalayan region, it promotes clouds, rain and snowfall. Due to snow covered peaks, cold winds blow towards the plains. When these winds meet the already cold and moist surface air, fog thickens. And the day temperature drops creating cold day conditions especially in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Where is rain and snowfall?

According to the Meteorological Department, there will be light to moderate rain and snowfall in several rounds in the Western Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. There are indications of heavy snowfall at some places for a day or two. This may cause slipping and disruption of traffic on hilly roads.

What will be the situation in the plains?

There is a possibility of dense to very dense fog in the morning and evening in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana and Western-Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Visibility may go below 50 meters in some areas. Due to the day temperature being below normal, there will be cold days and at some places severe cold days. Morning fog will also increase concern in parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal.

What does the temperature trend say?

The minimum temperature in North-West India may remain stable for now. But later there will be gradual ups and downs. The maximum temperature will fall in many states and will increase the feeling of cold. The temperature in the western Himalayan region will remain relatively high and low, while in the plains there will be chill due to cold winds.

Impact on travel and everyday life

There is a possibility of delays at airports and railway sections due to dense fog. Especially at some airports in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, a warning has been given that visibility will be very low. Fog-lights and limited speed have been advised while driving on the road.
