Can leather jacket be washed in washing machine?
Never make the mistake of putting a leather jacket in the washing machine to wash it. This removes the natural oils from the leather, causing the jacket to appear discolored and damaged. The best way to clean a leather jacket is spot cleaning.
Correct way to wash leather jacket
– Apply leather cleaner on a sponge or soft cloth and press it to form a lather. If leather cleaner is not available, take lukewarm water in a small bowl and add one or two drops of mild dishwashing liquid or neutral soap to it.
– Now gently rub the leather with a foam sponge or soapy cloth in a circular motion, so that the dirt accumulated on top is removed.
– Then wipe off the extra cleaner with a wet but well wrung out cloth. If necessary, repeat the same process, but do not rub too hard. As the sponge or cloth becomes dirty, keep rinsing or turning it to keep the dirt from returning to the leather.
– Lightly pat the leather dry with a clean towel and then allow the jacket to air dry completely. Always hang leather jackets on a padded or wooden hanger to avoid marks on the shoulders. Keep it away from sunlight and heat, as this can cause the leather to dry out and crack.
– After the jacket dries, apply leather conditioner on it, so that moisture and softness remains.
