Begusarai: See, just 23 year old Aarti Sharma, a resident of Himachal Pradesh, has become a topic of discussion in the industrial city of Begusarai in Bihar. Aarti, who studied from the hill town Shimla, has contributed new technology, new thinking and new energy to the health system here. He was sent to Begusarai under Gandhi Fellowship. Here he has started special work on maternal and child health. Aarti says that during this fellowship, she was given the aim of staying in Begusarai for two years to improve the health system and understand the needs on the ground.
Made women aware by going from village to village
Aarti told Local 18 that we did not limit our work here to just government meetings or documents, but went from door to door and village to village and directly communicated with the women. Made women aware on topics like pregnancy checkup, nutrition, precautions related to delivery, vaccination of children after delivery and health monitoring. Aarti says that even today in rural areas, many myths, fear and lack of information regarding women’s health is a big problem. In such a situation, he, along with the health department, Asha workers and local organizations, started an initiative to connect women with hospitals.
State’s largest pediatric hospital recognized
The state’s largest pediatric hospital located in Begusarai was feeling the need to strengthen its identity for a long time. Aarti played an important role here also. He reduced the trust gap between the health department and the public and tried to make hospital facilities available to as many people as possible. He says that ‘the system becomes stronger when people join it.’ With this thinking, he strengthened the model of maternal and child health through health technology, data monitoring and reporting.
Example of youth thinking and social responsibility
Aarti Sharma is one of those youth who give priority to the needs of the society rather than job. This young daughter, who came from the mountains to the plains, is raising new hopes of health revolution in Begusarai. His aim was not only to understand the system but also to change it and make it useful for the people, which he proved through his hard work and ground work.
