Raghuram Rajan News: Raghuram Rajan said that after Operation Sindoor, Pakistan got 19 percent tariff due to Trump’s flattery, while India had to face 50 percent tariff because it did not give credit to Trump. He refused to accept Russian oil as the reason behind the 50 percent tariff on India.
Raghuram Rajan News: After Operation Sindoor, Pakistan’s sycophancy made it Donald Trump’s favorite. PM Modi took a tough stand, hence America imposed 50 percent tariff on India. This is what former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has to say. According to Raghuram Rajan, the main reason for Donald Trump to impose 50 percent tariff on India was not the import of Russian oil. He said that America got angry with the way India reacted to Donald Trump’s claim on ceasefire with Pakistan after Operation Sindoor.
In this regard, a video of Raghuram Rajan is going viral. During an event at Zurich University, Raghuram Rajan claimed that America imposed 50 percent tariff on India because it did not support Donald Trump’s words, whereas Pakistan agreed with Trump and was rewarded with 19 percent tariff. Actually, Donald Trump had taken credit for the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Pakistan openly praised Trump and gave credit for the ceasefire. On the contrary, India did not give credit to Trump for the ceasefire.
What did Raghuram Rajan say
Referring to the May war between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, Rajan said, ‘I don’t think Russian oil was the issue. I think the main issue was about several personalities, especially one personality in the White House, and how they behaved on certain things in India after Trump took credit for stopping the war between India and Pakistan… Pakistan played it fair and said that all this happened because of Trump. Rajan says that Pakistan became Trump’s favorite by giving the credit of ceasefire to America. Whereas India, on the contrary, did not give credit, hence had to bear the tariff.
What is Rajan’s full statement?
Rajan further said, ‘India tried to argue that the two countries had reached an agreement without Trump. The truth probably lies somewhere in between… but the net effect was that India got 50 percent tariff, and Pakistan got 19 percent. I know your leader in Switzerland tried to explain the tariffs to Trump, there was some comment about that and it didn’t go over well. So we don’t know what actually happened between India and America, but hopefully in the long run there will be understanding on all sides and we will all reach the right deal.
Trump’s claim and India’s stand
Actually, after Pahalgam attack, India had conducted Operation Sindoor. During Operation Sindoor, the war with Pakistan was at its peak. Then ceasefire was announced on 10 May. Trump had taken credit for the ceasefire and said that the war ended due to his intervention. Pakistan had accepted this, but India had rejected it outright. India says that the agreement on ceasefire was reached when the Director General of Military Operations of the Pakistani Army called and requested to end the war. At the same time, Pakistan had not only accepted Trump’s words, but also accepted and nominated him for the Nobel Prize in Chamchagiri.
