Can IPL franchise owners get angry at players? What do rules say

IPL 2025: Lucknow Super Giants were on Monday to defeat Delhi Capitals in their first match of IPL 2025. But Ashutosh Sharma snatched the victory from the jaw of super giant and chased 210 runs in Visakhapatnam, giving the capitals victory. Two points, which were of super giants for a long time, eventually went into the bag of Delhi Capitals. After this defeat of Lucknow, the franchise owner Sanjeev Goenka appeared on the field with captain Rishabh Pant. The videos and pictures that are going viral on his social media, in which he (Sanjeev Goenka) is seen talking to Rishabh Pant.

In the video, Rishabh Pant is seen explaining something to Sanjeev Goenka. Seeing the seriousness of Rishabh Pant, it seems that Sanjeev was not very happy with the team’s performance. Lucknow Super Giants have spent Rs 27 crore to buy Rishabh Pant. Rishabh Pant is the most expensive player to be sold in IPL history. But Rishabh Pant would never like to remember the first match for the franchise. After playing six balls, Rishabh Pant returned to zero. Apart from this, there were some mistakes from him in the captaincy.

This is not the first time
However, this is not the first time that Sanjeev Goenka has come on the ground after the defeat of Lucknow and spoke to the captain. Last year, this happened to KL Rahul, the captain at that time. People were not happy with what happened at that time. Lucknow Super Giants had to face defeat by 10 wickets to Sunrisers Hyderabad in that match, due to which they could have lost the place in the play-off. Goenka did not appear humble towards his captain, who is one of the most brightest stars in world cricket.

KL Rahul heard well
Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul was standing in Jersey soaked, holding the strap of his helmet, listening to the words of Sanjeev Goenka, the owner of his extremely troubled team. RPSG Group billionaire chairman Goenka, who paid a record Rs 7,090 crore for the IPL franchise, continued to shake his hands. Meanwhile, Rahul would have tried a weak effort to answer, but would stop in the middle. He would give up, bow down his head and stared at the helmet in his hands. There was a lot of ruckus after this. KL Rahul was released by Lucknow before the mega auction of IPL 2025. Now Rahul is part of Delhi Capitals.

Anger on the field is derogatory
The IPL has made rules for the franchise owners how to run their team and how they will get a share in the revenue. But there is no such clear rule how they will talk with the players. Here only they are expected to treat them in a professional manner. The IPL franchise owners may feel disappointment or disgrace by a player’s performance, but it is generally non-professional and unfair to express anger on the players directly on the field during the match. The IPL is a professional league, and the professional level should be maintained in a conversation between owners and players. Publicly showing anger on the field is derogatory and can harm the player’s morale and the team’s image.

Private conversation is justified
The owners mainly handle the business and strategic aspects of the franchise. Coaching and player management on the field are usually responsibilities of team coaches and captains. The owners can discuss with the players privately after the match or during the team’s meetings, to remove concerns or respond. They can show their support through applause or positive gestures. There are examples where the owners show emotional response in the private box, but they are different from the field conversation. Public anger can create a negative atmosphere within the team and the player’s performance can be affected. When emotions are at its peak during IPL matches, no one will generally like to express the players directly on the field.

Wrong to underestimate stars
Whether Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul is going to disturb these scenes. Such conversations should be behind the closed doors, not in front of many cameras in the stadium. Coach scolds the team on the playground, the opponents take their fight beyond the boundary line. All this happens within the tolerance limit. But preaching an Indian cricket star by a non-cricketer owner is a crime for which he cannot be forgiven. IPL owners need to understand that they cannot underestimate the stars that bring fans to the stadium. These stars give them a chance to make the headlines, which the world is eyeing.

Business rules do not run in sports
They own teams, not members of the team. They can be champions of industries and corporate giants, but in the playground, especially for fans, they are additional artists. For years, cricketers have been a symbol of this country, they cannot be publicly despised in stadiums filled with fans. This is the auction process of the IPL which makes the owners a false feeling of owners’ owners. For most, cricket is one of his many corporate acquisitions and is part of their commercial diversification strategy. This is the reason that the IPL team is considered as a commercial unit, in which cricketers are as their spectators. But sports are not governed by the rules taught in business school and this is not an investment that gives regular annual dividends. A captain cannot be seen as a clumsy floor manager.

Take inspiration from football and basketball
T20 cricket desires to become global by making it to the American Pro-Sports Market and has already been included in the Olympics. But with such a huge ambitions, it cannot continue these trivial antics that underestimate their biggest cricketers. The drama on the field in T20 is enough, it does not need any other story like reality TVs. The age of IPL is just 17 years old, but it is a teenager than the worldwide more developed and grand sports leagues, where global sports stars play for more rich owners. Cricket in India can take inspiration from football in Europe and basketball in America. This is the place where the owners respect the sanctity of the team dugout.
