Should You Avoid Lemon in Acidity: Lemon is considered a good source of Vitamin C and many people include lemon in their diet daily. Lemon is considered helpful in boosting immunity during winter season. Lemon is rich in antioxidants and many nutrients. Lemon tastes sour and contains citric acid. Many people feel that eating lemon can increase the problem of acidity. Because of this, people suffering from acidity avoid lemon. However, health experts believe that lemon can also be beneficial for acidity patients.
Ranjana Singh, founder and dietician of Ranjana Nutriglow Clinic, Ghaziabad, told StuffUnknown. Even though lemon is sour in taste and contains citric acid, it has an alkaline effect after it is metabolized in the body. If you understand in simple language, lemon can help in balancing the pH level of the body. This is the reason why in some people lemon water calms the stomach and reduces acidity. However, it does not have the same effect on everyone. It depends on what is causing the person’s acidity and what is the sensitivity of his intestines.
The dietitian said that people who suffer from severe acid reflux, GERD, stomach burning or increased acidity at night, should avoid lemon. The citric acid present in lemon can increase the burning sensation in the upper part of the stomach and in such a situation, eating food containing lemon or drinking lemon water can increase the burning sensation in the chest and sour belching. Such patients should consume lemon with caution or consult a doctor before consuming it.
According to experts, if the acidity is mild and does not persist for long, then drinking 1-2 teaspoons of lemon juice mixed with lukewarm water in the morning can help in cleansing the stomach, improving digestion and reducing gas. Vitamin C present in lemon activates digestive enzymes, due to which food gets digested quickly and reduces pressure on the stomach. For those who eat too much oil and spices or have slow metabolism, lemon in limited quantities can be beneficial.
