A big revelation has come to light in the investigation of the attack on the National Guard in Washington. American officials say that the accused Afghan migrant Rahmanullah Lakanwal turned towards radicalism after coming to America. Lakanwal, who was deported in 2021, was granted asylum by the Trump administration. After the attack, Trump has indicated a long pause on the asylum process. The government is now re-examining every pending case.
The investigation into the attack on two National Guard soldiers in Washington DC has now reached a new turn. American officials believe that the radical thinking of the accused Afghan migrant Rahmanullah Lakanwal did not develop in Afghanistan, but after coming to America. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem herself made this claim during two major interviews on Sunday. 29-year-old Lakanwal is accused of ambushing and firing at two National Guard soldiers just a few blocks away from the White House. 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom died and 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe was seriously injured in this attack. This incident has created an uproar in American politics. At the same time, the question is also arising whether now big threats are arising within America itself.
When and how did Lakanwal become fanatic?
Kristi Noem said that preliminary investigation indicated that Lakanwal came in contact with radical networks while living in Washington State. He said- ‘We believe that his thinking changed after coming here. We are interrogating his family and people associated with the community. Lakanwal came to America in 2021 at a time when the Biden administration had conducted a large-scale evacuation of American allies from Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover. However, he was approved for asylum by the Trump administration in April.
What steps did the Trump administration take?
The Trump administration has adopted a tough stance after the attack. He indicated that America may stop asylum admissions for a long time. Trump said- ‘There is no time limit, but the ban could be long. We already have enough problems. We don’t want to bring more people in.
Was Lakanwal in a CIA supported unit?
Yes. It is recorded in government documents that Lakanwal was part of a CIA-backed unit in Afghanistan. A major reason for his coming to America was that he used to help America during the war. But now the US administration is saying that his radical thinking developed here and he was influenced by his ‘family and people associated with the community’.
What did DHS warn about?
Kristi Noem warned that the US administration will take strict action against anyone who hides information related to the attack or does not cooperate. He said, ‘If someone has information and does not come forward, then we are not going to leave him either.’
What steps did America take after the attack?
- America has stopped all asylum applications.
- The investigation team is interrogating Lakanwal’s relatives, community and acquaintances.
- The government has indicated that people with pending asylum cases could also be deported if they are considered a threat.
- America has started investigating all the green cards given in the Biden administration.
