Rio de Janeiro: The Supreme Court of Brazil has given permission to include former President Jair Bolsonaro in the investigation of the riots on January 8 this year in the capital Brasilia. This is the first time that Bolsonaro has been named among those potentially responsible for these riots in the country’s capital. Jair Bolsonaro posted a video questioning the legitimacy of the October presidential election. A few days later, a crowd of his supporters entered the Supreme Court, the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Brasília, including all constitutional and government institutions, causing violence, vandalism and arson.

Prosecutors have cited Jair Bolsonaro’s video message and his claims of rigging in the presidential election as inciting miscreants for the Brasilia violence. On Friday, he demanded the Supreme Court to include the former President in the investigation. Bolsonaro claimed in his video that Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva did not return to power by getting the votes of the people, but the Supreme Court and the Electoral Authority of Brazil helped him win the election. However, the video was posted after the riots and was later removed.

The chief prosecutor’s office argued in the Supreme Court that the content of the video was sufficient to justify an investigation into Bolsonaro. On January 8, 2022, supporters of the former president stormed the Supreme Court, Parliament and the Presidential Palace in the country’s capital Brasilia, claiming rigging in the election. They had been camping in and around the capital Brasilia for weeks demanding a military coup. Meanwhile, Jair Bolsonaro has been admitted to a hospital in Florida after complaining of stomach pain, his wife said. He emigrated from Brazil to the US in late December, after refusing to attend the handover ceremony to Lula da Silva.

Several businessmen and officials are being investigated, including Anderson Torres, Brasilia’s former security chief who fled to the US before the riots. On Thursday, the police visited his house and found a document which allegedly contained a plot to overturn the election result in October. Torres argues the document has been taken out of context, but Justice Minister Flavio Dino has said he must present himself in court by Monday or face extradition. Earlier, Lula da Silva accused Bolsonaro’s associates of helping in the attack on the presidential palace. More than 1,200 people have been formally arrested for inciting and participating in the riots in Brasilia.
