Bokaro: Vikram Mahato, a farmer from Purnibagiyari village in Bokaro district of Jharkhand, is earning good income by cultivating cauliflower in one acre of land. By adopting mulching and drip irrigation methods, he has achieved better profits in less time.
Farming started during the Corona period
In a special conversation with Local 18, farmer Vikram Mahato told that he got inspiration for farming during the Corona lockdown in the year 2020. When he returned to his village from outside work during the lockdown, he saw his unemployed relative doing farming using drip irrigation and mulching techniques in Ranchi. Inspired by the good income he was earning from farming, he also decided to take up farming.
Better income from vegetable farming
Today, apart from traditional farming, Vikram is earning better income by cultivating many types of vegetables. According to Vikram, he had sown cauliflower in the last week of September, which was ready in about three months. Farmers get better profits due to the crop being ready in less time. This is the reason why they cultivate such crops which are ready quickly.
Net profit up to Rs 140,000
Vikram further said that the total cost of cultivating cauliflower in one acre is Rs 40 thousand. At present the wholesale price of cauliflower in the market is Rs 30 to Rs 35 per kg. He sells his vegetables mainly in the vegetable markets of Kasamar and nearby areas. According to Vikram, about 6 to 7 tonnes of cauliflower is produced from one acre of field. In the last season, he had earned approximately Rs 1,80,000. In such a situation, farmers can earn a net profit of up to Rs 140,000 from cauliflower cultivation.
Danger of these insects in cauliflower
Regarding the cultivation of cauliflower, Vikram said that in its cultivation there is a high risk of weevils and sucking insects. In such a situation, the cauliflower crop can be saved by using organic pesticides on time. Due to this, its crop grows faster. Also, farmers can get better yield and profits.
