Bihar's second Doppler radar to start soon! Benefits up to Bengal-Nepal with 8 districts, airport operation will be easy

Purnia: The people of Purnia and Seemanchal are going to get a big gift in the new year i.e. 2026. After Patna, Bihar’s second most modern Doppler radar (DW radar) is being installed in Purnia. Which will start working in January next year. Many modern weather related instruments along with Doppler radar are being installed in Purnia’s weather office at a cost of Rs 57 crore. Weather alert will be issued three hours before this. Farmers and common people will benefit from this.

Know whether everyone will get benefit

Meteorologist Birendra Kumar Jha said that with the installation of this Doppler radar, accurate weather information of Purnia, Seemanchal, Kosi, Nepal, Bengal and some parts of the Himalayan region within a radius of 200 kilometers will be available two-three hours in advance. This will reduce the number of deaths in this area due to lightning. Also, farmers will get information related to cyclone, rain and other weather in advance. Due to which their loss will be reduced. The same meteorologist Rakesh Kumar said that a balloon will also be installed here to measure the wind speed. This will facilitate the landing and take off of aircraft at Purnia Airport. Apart from this, seismography is also to be installed here soon. This will also provide information related to earthquake.

Meteorologist Rakesh Kumar said that the airport will also get a lot of benefits. The speed, direction and pressure of the wind at the time of landing and takeoff of the aircraft is given by the Meteorological Department. Route forecast is given to the pilot. RSRW and radar will prove useful. This will provide accurate weather information.

How does Doppler radar work?
Transmission of radio waves: The radar antenna sends high frequency radio waves into the atmosphere. Collision with rain particles. These waves collide with rain drops, snow or hail and return back. Change in frequency (Doppler shift). Changes in the frequency of the returning waves reveal whether particles are moving toward or away from the radar and how fast. Computer software extracts wind speed, direction, rainfall intensity and storm structure from this data.
