Kochi. Girl students of a Kerala university can avail “menstrual relief” as an additional exemption for lack of attendance. Keeping in mind the long-standing demand of girl students, the renowned Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) here has approved an additional two per cent relaxation for the shortfall in attendance of girl students in each semester. An autonomous university, CUSAT has more than 8000 students in various streams and more than half of them are girls.
An order issued by the joint registrar said, “After considering the requests for menstrual benefits to female students, the Vice-Chancellor approves an additional relaxation of two per cent in attendance of female students in each semester, subject to reporting to the Academic Council.” ordered to give. According to sources in the university, for some time now various student unions had been pressurizing girl students to be given menstruation ‘benefits’.
There will be separate discount for each girl student
A proposal in this regard was formally submitted to the Vice Chancellor recently. After it was approved, an order was issued. When contacted, a CUSAT official said that relaxation will be different for each girl student as it will depend on her attendance. The officer told ‘News Agency’, “It will be different for each girl student. Every girl student can claim two per cent of her total attendance as menstruation benefit.”
The order will be applicable to all girl students including PhD in the university
The order will apply to all girl students, including those pursuing PhD in the university, and is expected to come into force with immediate effect, the official said. University Students’ Union President Namita George expressed happiness that the university accepted her demand without any objection.

“As per rules, CUSAT students need 75 per cent attendance in each semester to appear in the exam, but through the new order, girl students will get a relaxation of two per cent and their qualifying attendance in each semester will be reduced to 73 per cent .
