New Delhi. The news of the death of the accused convicted in the Batla House encounter case has come to the fore. Indian Mujahideen terrorist Shahzad Ahmed died during treatment in AIIMS. Shahzad Ahmed was accused of killing Inspector Mohan Sharma of Delhi Police. News agency ANI quoted jail officials as saying that Indian Mujahideen terrorist Shahzad Ahmed died on Saturday during treatment. Ahmed was convicted of killing Delhi Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma and assaulting other officers in the 2008 Batla House encounter.
Delhi High Court had directed Shahzad Ahmed to be admitted to Safdarjung Hospital in December itself. Ahmed, serving life sentence in the 2008 Batla House encounter case, was earlier admitted to GTB Hospital. Ahmed had some complaint in his stomach and he was also kept on ventilator for some time.
What is Batla House case?
On September 13, 2008, the Indian Mujahideen took responsibility for the bomb blasts at different places in Delhi. On September 19, 2008, there was an encounter between suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists and Delhi Police hiding in L-18 house of Batla House in Jamia Nagar area of Delhi. Two terrorists were killed in this encounter, while two terrorists, including Ariz Khan, managed to escape. One of the accused was arrested by the police.
This entire operation was being done under the leadership of Delhi Police Inspector Mohan Chandra Sharma. Sharma was also considered an encounter specialist. During his duty, he had killed more than 35 terrorists, along with this he had also arrested more than 80 terrorists. Inspector Mohan Chandra Sharma, who was injured in this encounter, was admitted to the Holy Family Hospital, where he died after eight hours of treatment.
After this encounter, there was a lot of uproar across the country. Protests took place at various places across the country regarding Sharma’s death. All the leaders had also termed this encounter as fake. Political parties and human rights organizations had also raised the demand for a judicial inquiry into the entire episode.
