Assam Cabinet approves polygamy prohibition bill
Earlier, the Assam Cabinet had approved the Assam Polygamy Prohibition Bill 2025 on November 9. Its objective is to outlaw and end the practice of polygamy in the entire state except in the Sixth Schedule areas. The cabinet meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Seva Bhawan. This decision taken in the meeting is a decisive step towards promoting gender justice and social harmony.
Actually, there is a provision in this bill that a person whose spouse is alive, neither of them are divorced or they are not legally separated, cannot marry again. The bill provides for compensation for women affected by polygamy. The state government said that this law has been made to save the society from the scourge of such practices and to maintain valid and equitable marital relations in the state.
