With the rapidly increasing use of Digital India, our personal documents are now kept safe in digital form. DigiLocker is one such government initiative, which allows citizens to store their important documents like Aadhaar card, PAN card, driving license, vehicle registration and educational certificates in digital form. This app not only helps in keeping the documents safe, but also makes it easy to access them anywhere and anytime. However, recently many fake DigiLocker apps have appeared on the App Store, which are deceiving users by looking like genuine apps.
Therefore, to avoid cyber fraud, the government has issued a new DigiLocker alert. In this alert shared from the official X (earlier Twitter) handle of Digital India, citizens have been warned to download only the official DigiLocker app. Recently, many fake apps have been seen on the App Store, which are deceiving people by looking like the real DigiLocker and can put their personal data at risk.
DigiLocker is a digital document wallet service of the Government of India, in which Aadhaar card, PAN card, driving license, vehicle registration, educational records and other important documents are kept securely. Using fake apps to keep such sensitive documents safe can be very risky.
What to do if you have accidentally downloaded a fake app?
The government has advised users that if they have accidentally downloaded any suspicious app, they should immediately delete it and change the passwords of all linked accounts.
The original DigiLocker app is created only by the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), Government of India. The official website is digilocker.gov.in. It should be downloaded.
The alert also states that users should only use links through government websites and should not download any apps from unknown developers or third-party app stores. To help identify the genuine app, the government has also shared images of its interface, which shows information about documents issued, Aadhaar integration and features like PAN verification, vehicle registration, National Health ID and LIC policy.
Due to increasing cyber fraud, digital vigilance is very important. Users should always ensure that they download government services apps only from official sources and report any suspicious apps.
