US President Donald Trump’s diplomacy has always been shocking, but this time the contradiction is at its peak. On one hand, the call of ‘Radical Islam’ is being heard in America’s own cities, the Jewish community is feeling unsafe, and on the other hand, Donald Trump, who spews fire against America First and fundamentalism, is busy preparing to welcome Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir. This equation can surprise anyone. After all, why does Trump have this softness in his heart for the ‘boss’ of the same Pakistan which Trump had called a liar and a fraud during his previous tenure?
General Asim Munir the real ‘Sultan’ of Pakistan
Donald Trump is a businessman and he knows who to deal with. In Pakistan, whether the government is of Shehbaz Sharif or anyone else, the real power rests with the Army Chief sitting in Rawalpindi. General Asim Munir is the most powerful person in Pakistan at present. Trump’s meeting with Asim Munir is not love for Pakistan, but a give-and-take strategy.
Trump’s U-turn: Why is Pakistan important?
Even though Trump is against fundamentalism, he has to join hands with some people for America’s national security. There are many reasons for this.
- Pakistan is the only Muslim nuclear-armed country in the world, which has become economically poor. The biggest fear of America and Trump is that if Pakistan disintegrates completely, its nuclear weapons may fall into the hands of any terrorist organization like TTP or ISIS. Joining hands with General Munir is one way to ensure the security of those weapons.
- America has left Afghanistan, but the threat of ISIS-K and Al-Qaeda still exists there. Trump needs a partner on the ground to keep an eye on these terrorists. Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI still has a strong hold in Afghanistan. Trump wants Pakistan to work as a watchdog for America.
- China’s siege: Pakistan is gradually becoming a colony of China. Be it Gwadar Port or CPEC, China is swallowing Pakistan. Trump’s strategy is to weaken China. By bringing Munir into his fold, Trump will try to ensure that Pakistan does not sit completely in China’s lap.
Asim Munir’s helplessness too
Imran Khan is in jail in Pakistan and is against the army. Munir wants Trump not to give any tweet or statement in support of Imran Khan after becoming President again. Munir is going to make America understand that I am the one who can keep Pakistan stable, not Imran. Trump likes stability, that is why he is giving importance to Munir.
This is not ‘love’, this is ‘business’
It would be wrong to call this Trump’s love for Pakistan. Trump’s message is clear, inside America I will fight against radical Islam, I will protect the Jews, but in foreign policy I will join hands with only those who will benefit me. By welcoming General Asim Munir, Trump wants to ensure that when he sits in the White House, this headache of South Asia (Pakistan) remains under his control and does not create any new problems for him. This is Trump style diplomacy… Keep the enemy close, so that better surveillance can be kept on him.
