MBBS Attendance Rules: It is considered very important for doctors to remain disciplined. Now they will be given training in this right after studying in medical college i.e. MBBS.
New Delhi (MBBS Attendance Rules). The National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken a big step to ensure the quality of medical education and discipline among students in India. As per the recent instructions of NMC, if MBBS students bunk classes without any valid reason or have less attendance then information about the same will be sent to their parents or guardians. This new rule will be applicable in all medical colleges across the country. Its objective is to reduce irregularities and negligence among medical students.
How much attendance is required in MBBS?
NMC has made it mandatory for MBBS students to have minimum 75% attendance. This initiative will help in strict implementation of mandatory norms. You will be able to appear for MBBS exam only after having this much attendance. If the attendance of a student is repeatedly found to be less than 75%, the college management will first inform the parents and if there is no improvement even then the student may be debarred from appearing in the examination. This strict step by NMC is a big effort towards maintaining high standards in the Indian medical system.
New rule: What is the instruction of NMC?
The National Medical Commission has given clear instructions to all affiliated medical colleges to immediately inform the parents/guardians of those MBBS students who have poor attendance or are bunking classes. Colleges will now strictly maintain attendance records of students and send information about absence to parents at scheduled intervals through SMS, email or other digital means. The main objective of this rule is to develop a sense of seriousness and responsibility in the students, which is necessary for doctors in the future.
Why is discipline important in medical education?
Studying MBBS is different from any other undergraduate course because it is directly related to human life. Most of the knowledge in MBBS is gained through patient care and clinical rotations in hospital wards rather than lectures in class. Students who do not attend regularly lag behind in developing life-saving skills that are considered essential in emergency situations. This initiative will teach the students right from the beginning that as a doctor they are accountable for their duties.
What is the process of implementing the rules?
Medical colleges must ensure that they develop robust and transparent systems to monitor the attendance of students. Many colleges are now using biometric attendance systems or special apps, so that there are no irregularities in the attendance records. If there is no improvement in the student’s attendance even after sending information to the parents, the Medical College may debar the student from appearing in the final examination of the University.
