Wheat Cultivation Tips: It is very important to do the first irrigation 20-25 days after sowing wheat. Using urea in right quantity at this time supplies nitrogen to the plants, due to which buds emerge faster. According to agricultural experts, after the first irrigation, if there is moisture in the field, 40 to 50 kg urea should be applied per acre. This improves plant growth and strengthens roots.
Lakhimpur: Wheat has been sown in most of the districts of UP and farmers are preparing for the first irrigation. However, some farmers do late sowing of wheat in late December or early January. According to experts, it is very important to irrigate at the right time for good wheat production. Generally wheat crop requires irrigation 4 to 6 times. The first and most important irrigation should be done at the crown root initiation (CRI) stage 20–25 days after sowing. Give the second irrigation at 40–45 days at the time of germination and the third irrigation at 60–65 days at the stage of nodule formation. Fourth irrigation is beneficial before ear budding and fifth irrigation is beneficial during milk stage.
Agricultural scientist Pradeep Bisen said that the development of secondary roots in plants starts 20 to 25 days after sowing of wheat. These roots absorb nutrients and moisture from the soil, hence it is considered very important to have adequate moisture in the field at this time. By doing the first irrigation on time and in balanced quantity, more ears emerge in wheat, which increases both the number of ears and the yield.
Keep these things in mind
During irrigation, keep in mind that the field should not remain filled with water for long. Excessive water logging can cause rotting of roots and yellowing of plants. Water dries up quickly in fields with light soil, hence timely irrigation is even more important there. After the first irrigation, it is beneficial to apply 40 to 50 kg urea per acre, due to which the crop gets adequate nitrogen. Always apply fertilizer after irrigation, when there is proper moisture in the field. During this, keep in mind that the field should neither be too dry nor too wet.
weed control
Weeds can become a problem in the wheat crop. To control these, herbicides can be used as per requirement. Bathua often grows in the fields, which many farmers even today destroy by removing them by hand.
