Gautam Adani: The business of Adani Group, led by veteran businessman Gautam Adani, is spread across sectors ranging from infrastructure to energy, FMCG to logistics and media, defence, aerospace, mining. Now it is preparing to enter the nuclear energy sector. For this, talks are going on with the Uttar Pradesh government. According to media reports, the company plans to build eight 200-MW Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). This initiative is being taken at a time when the government is trying to diversify energy sources in an attempt to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
It is being told that the state government has not yet found a suitable place on the river bank for this plant of Adani Group, which is necessary to ensure continuous supply of water to the reactors. Many other big Indian groups like Tata Group, Reliance Industries Limited and JSW Group are also trying to make a place in this emerging sector. According to the report, Adani Group is in talks with Uttar Pradesh government officials in this regard.

Under this arrangement, the government company Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) will operate the proposed plant on behalf of Adani Group. The government Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) is currently working on the design and development of 200 MW SMRs, which the Adani Group intends to install. After government approval, the project is expected to take five to six years to complete.
Investment will increase in nuclear sector
Parliament has recently given approval to private firms to open nuclear industry. At present, India operates about two dozen nuclear plants at seven places, which contribute about 3 percent to the country’s total power production. Work is underway on a plan to increase their capacity from the current 8780 MW to 13600 MW, for which projects are being implemented in different phases. Since till now this sector has been working in a limited scope, now with the entry of private companies in it, investment will increase and a large number of people will get employment.
