Adani Airports: Gautam Adani, the second richest person in India and Asia, is continuously expanding his airport business by focusing on it. In this sequence, Adani Group’s flagship company Adani Enterprises plans to spend $11 billion on airports in the next five years.
Apart from this, there is also a plan to make strong bids for 11 airports given on lease to private companies by the government. At present, Adani Enterprises, a company led by Gautam Adani, is managing seven airports in the country. Apart from this, another new airport is going to be operational near Mumbai this month.
The company has a strong plan
In this sequence, in an interview given to PTI, Gautam Adani’s younger son Jeet Adani said that the company is preparing to spend 11 billion dollars i.e. Rs 1 lakh crore to expand its airport business in the next five years. However, there are currently no plans to start an airline in the world’s fastest growing aviation market.
Apart from this, the company is also preparing to bid for the privatization of 11 new airports, which the government wants to lease to the private sector so that the profits of these airports can increase by associating with private companies. These may include airports like Varanasi, Bhubaneswar and Amritsar.
Government wants to increase the number of airports
The government wants to increase the number of airports from the present 163 to 350-400 by 2047. Earlier this year, the government had talked about leasing 11 airports including Amritsar and Banaras.
“We will bid for all those 11 airports,” Jeet Adani, director of Adani Airports Holdings Ltd., told Reuters in an interview in Mumbai this week. Adani Group’s focus on airports is happening at a time when India’s aviation market has become one of the fastest growing markets in the world. According to the International Air Transport Association, about 174 million passengers traveled by air to and from India in 2024, which is 10 percent more than a year ago. Indian Airlines has ordered more than 1,300 aircraft since 2023.
Are you planning to launch an IPO?
On the question of bringing IPO, Jeet Adani said that there is no fixed timeline for public listing. The IPO or demerger of Adani Airports will depend on achieving certain milestones, which include the business becoming cash positive. He said that it is possible that the company may bring an IPO by the year 2028. For this, the airport unit can be demerged from Adani Enterprises, which will provide good value to investors.
