Tomato has deep roots. Therefore, choosing a suitable pot is very important. 12 to 14 inch deep pots or grow bags are considered best. The bigger the pot, the better the growth of the plant. Even if there is less space in the balcony, one or two big pots can be easily placed.
The soil mixture should be nutritious and light for proper plants. Mix equal amounts of ordinary soil, cow dung manure and sand in the pot. Coconut shavings and vermi-compost can also be added to it. This mixture will provide adequate nutrition to the plant and will also maintain proper drainage of water in the pot, due to which the plant can be saved from rotting.
Before sowing tomato seeds, soak them in a wet cloth for 12 hours. Due to this the seeds germinate quickly. Put the seeds in the pot at a shallow depth and cover them with some soil. Small plants will start emerging in 5 to 7 days. When they become 4 to 5 inches high, it is necessary to transplant them into a bigger pot.

If insects appear, neem oil or garlic spray is very effective. This natural pesticide protects the plant from pests without harming it and also improves the quality of the fruit.
