Kandela had no idea how this tape got into his nose and how it remained stuck there for so many years. They suspect that it may have been accidentally left in his nose along with the nasal tube that was put in during respiratory distress in the hospital when he was a newborn.

Kandela told that he always had difficulty in breathing. Air came out of his right nostril with great difficulty, due to which he had difficulty in even small physical activities. She says, “Ever since I can remember, air was not coming out of my right nose properly. I had difficulty in running because I had to breathe through the mouth. The same problem existed while sleeping. I kept living considering it as normal because I had become accustomed to this habit since childhood.” At that time he had no idea what the long-term side effects of mouth breathing could be.
