Sarhasa: Mohammad Alam, living in Maina village of Saharsa district of Bihar, has set such an example, which is changing the lives of many youth today. Alam, who once worked hard in the fields with limited resources, has today made about 100 youth of the village self-reliant. The biggest specialty of his work is that he not only made the barren land of the village fertile, but also made that land a source of employment for the youth.
Alam says that for years he has been experimenting in various fields of agriculture. Sometimes they have been doing fish farming, sometimes makhana production and sometimes mushroom and water chestnut fruit cultivation. During this time, he saw that most of the youth of the village were migrating to other states in search of employment. Staying away from his family, he used to work as a laborer for months, yet he was not able to earn a satisfactory income. This scene always shook Alam from within.
One day he decided that only the land of the village could change the fate of the youth of the village. It was then that he started connecting the youth of the village and showed them the path of modern and practical farming. Alam suggested building a pond on barren land, so that various types of farming and production could be possible at one place. Under his guidance, the pond was prepared and activities like fish farming, water chestnut cultivation, makhana production were started in it.
Along with this, some youth were trained in mushroom production and taken forward in a different direction. Within no time this experiment became an example of success in the village. Gradually, other youth also joined and today the situation is such that about 100 youth, including many women, are earning respectable income from agriculture-based work in their own village. The biggest thing is that now the youth of the village do not have to go out for employment. Every youth is living a happy life by living in his village, with his family and doing farming related work.
Alam says that whenever he saw the youth of the village going out, he felt sad. Thought why not make such arrangements that the villagers work in the village itself and remain happy. The idea of generating employment by utilizing barren land came from there. I only showed the way, it is the youth who have done the hard work. Today this effort of Mohammad Alam has become an inspiration not only for Maina village but also for the entire area. His thinking and initiative have proved that with the right guidance and collective strength, village soil can become the biggest employer.
