What technology made it possible
The lift system of Burj Khalifa has been designed and installed by Otis company. It is specially designed for high speed lifts. To pull the lift up so fast, extremely powerful and high-torque motors are used in it. These motors specifically rotate the traction sheave fitted in the shaft of the lift which pulls the steel ropes (cables). These motors are more energy efficient than conventional lifts and are capable of maintaining a consistently high speed.
Durable and lightweight cables
To reach such heights, the weight of the cables becomes a big problem. Traditional steel cables are very heavy, which adds extra weight to the lift and reduces speed. Burj Khalifa’s lifts likely used cables made of carbon fiber or other advanced, lightweight and strong synthetic materials.
