India Indonesia BrahMos Deal Big Update: The whole world is surprised by India’s precise attack in Operation Sindoor. In this infallible attack, BrahMos missile along with S-400 air defense system created havoc. In such a situation, the whole world wants to buy BrahMos missile system from India. Indonesia, the world’s largest Islamic country, also stands in this series. In fact, significant progress was made towards taking defense cooperation between India and Indonesia to new heights. In the third India-Indonesia Defense Ministers’ talks held in New Delhi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafri Sjamsoedin held detailed discussions on further strengthening bilateral defense relations.
Although the official statement did not mention the BrahMos missile, senior officials familiar with the discussions said there was new and concrete progress on the BrahMos export deal. During the talks, Rajnath Singh presented the model of BrahMos missile to the Indonesian Defense Minister, which is being considered as an open indication of the growing defense partnership between the two countries. Indonesia has been showing keen interest in acquiring BrahMos supersonic cruise missile for a long time. Jakarta considers it strategically important to strengthen its maritime security in the Strait of Malacca, Natuna region and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
How far did the conversation reach?
The first phase of procurement, long-term maintenance support and training packages for Indonesian forces have already been negotiated. Now officials are saying that the talks have reached a high level and there is a possibility of a formal announcement in the near future. This possible deal is not being limited to arms purchase only. Both countries are considering making it a big platform for defense industrial cooperation. Indonesia is exploring maintenance infrastructure and technology partnerships in India. To speed up the procurement process, a proposal to form a joint committee is also moving forward, which will resolve issues like certification, supply chain and joint development mechanism.
What other issues were discussed?
Apart from BrahMos, both the ministers stressed on increasing joint military exercises, professional training programs and maritime security cooperation. Cyber security, intelligence sharing and maritime awareness in the Indian Ocean were given priority. Both sides committed to continue high-level exchanges and practical cooperation for peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
Earlier this year, Indonesia demonstrated the growing trust between the two countries by sending a 352-member contingent to India’s Republic Day parade. If the BrahMos deal is finalized, Indonesia will become the second foreign operator after the Philippines. This will further increase India’s stature as a defense exporter.
