Kolkata: Political conflict regarding the SIR process is continuously increasing in Bengal. Trinamool Congress met the Chief Election Commissioner on Tuesday and after the end of the meeting alleged that none of the questions they asked the Election Commission got answered. The TMC delegation claims that the SIR process has become a mixture of ‘hasty, disorganized and pressure’. Thousands of people are getting troubled by this.
2 hour meeting with Election Commission, but answer ‘zero’
Mahua Moitra raised technical questions
The main arguments of Mahua were as follows-
- Form-7 is for removing the name of an already deceased person.
- Form-8 is for improving the records of people who have migrated.
- How will duplicate voters be identified without deduplication software?
- Why is the SIR process like a duplicate copy of already available provisions?
We are not against the process, but against ‘inhumane methods’ – Derrick O’Brien
Derrick O’Brien said that TMC is not questioning the constitutional validity of SIR, but is questioning its method. It is being implemented in this. He said that ‘it is being implemented without planning, without sensitivity and in a ruthless manner, that is why it is being opposed.’
The 10-member delegation submitted the list of 40 dead BLOs in a 2-hour meeting.
Shatabdi Roy raised 5 questions of TMC
After the meeting, MP Shatabdi Roy said that all the questions of TMC remained unanswered. He enumerated five big questions as follows-
- SIR for whom? If it is for infiltrators then why only in Bengal?
- If the old list is wrong then the government is wrong? EC did not respond to our objections.
- Pressure on BLO? We are giving the figure of 40 deaths, EC is not ready to accept it.
- Why not include bungalow assistants? This can speed up the process.
- Why Bihar Model? Is there an attempt to create a situation in Bengal also like not being able to vote despite having a voter card?
understand the whole matter
| Issue | TMC’s allegation | EC’s reply |
| SIR needed | If the old list is correct then why the new SIR? | no clear answer |
| BLO’s death | Claim of 40 deaths | EC did not accept |
| Presence of Form-7/8 | old form enough | EC called the new system ‘necessary’ |
| duplication | no software | EC informed that the process is ongoing |
| Discrimination in states only | Why SIR in Bengal | No answer |
TMC’s serious allegations against BJP
TMC MPs claimed that in the statement of some BJP leaders it has been said that ‘We will delete 1 crore names.’ TMC’s question is how did they know this number? The party alleges that this is an indication that ‘BJP is controlling the Election Commission.’
The party says that there is Mamata Banerjee’s government in Bengal and ‘Bihar like model will not be allowed to be implemented here.’
TMC’s claim- Will not let things like Bihar happen in Bengal
The party says that there is Mamata Banerjee’s government in Bengal and ‘Bihar like model will not be allowed to be implemented here.’ TMC clearly said that every flaw in the SIR process will be exposed and will continue to demand answers from the Election Commission.
