Gumla: The district administration has fully geared up to control the ever increasing road accidents in Gumla district of Jharkhand. The district administration is continuously running vehicle checking campaigns with the aim of curbing road accidents and enforcing strict discipline towards traffic rules. In this context, an unprecedented and intensive vehicle checking campaign was conducted today. As per the strict instructions of Gumla Deputy Commissioner Prerna Dixit and SP Harish, this campaign was conducted by the police of several police stations in the district simultaneously. The campaign was conducted till late evening on various major roads and intersections of the district including Bharno police station, Sisai police station, Kamdara police station and Gumla police station.

The joint action of the DTO team and the police force under the leadership of District Transport Officer Gyan Shankar Jaiswal created a stir among the drivers breaking the rules. Police deployment was seen at police station premises and main intersections since morning. In such a situation, the drivers could not make any excuse. During this comprehensive investigation, strict action was taken against about 200 drivers who violated traffic rules, due to which the district administration collected a fine of about Rs 5 lakh.
DTO Gyan Shankar Jaiswal said that the primary aim of this initiative is not to harass people by running vehicle checking campaign but to reduce road accidents. So far this year, there have been more than 200 deaths in road accidents. In such a situation, the need of the hour is to rein in the drivers who continuously break the rules.

Apart from imposing fines during the vehicle checking drive, the officers also stressed on sensitizing the caught drivers about the importance of road safety. DTO Gyan Shankar Jaiswal personally explained to the drivers about the serious consequences of accidents due to negligence. The administration gave a clear warning and said, “If you want to save your life then improve, if you have a helmet then life will also be there, leave the helmet at home, the district administration will not spare you.”
The main focus of the investigation is on making helmets mandatory for two-wheeler drivers and ensuring seat belts for four-wheeler/goods vehicle drivers. Apart from this, cases of triple riding, speeding, ‘drink and drive’ are also being taken care of and challans are issued when caught. Besides, strict action was also taken against those driving vehicles without invalid documents like license, insurance and PUC.
Administration’s strictness on school buses, action on overloading and risky travel
During this campaign, the administration showed special strictness on school vehicles, the principals of Rajshree School and Shail Putri School were reprimanded and fined for seating more children in the vehicles than the prescribed capacity. In this series, challan was also issued on the bus of St. Mary’s School, Busia due to violation of rules. Apart from this, strict action was also taken against the mode of transportation which put the lives of passengers at risk. Immediate action was taken and fine was imposed on the bus named Julie for making the passengers travel by making them sit on the roof of the bus. Officials made it clear that playing with public safety in any way will not be tolerated.
