Dhanbad: With the onset of cold weather, the fields have returned to their glory. Farmer brothers have once again started cultivating mustard. According to agricultural experts, the time from October to December is considered most favorable for sowing mustard. Mustard sown during this period grows faster and the yield is also better. To carry forward this hard work of the farmers in Dhanbad, the Agriculture Department is providing many types of technical help and seeds.
The team of News 18 Local took expert tips in this regard from Dr. Adarsh Kumar Srivastava, agricultural expert of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Balliapur. He told that this time mustard seeds have been distributed to about 500 farmers in 10 blocks of the district. About two kilos of mustard seeds are required per acre of field. Mustard of BBM-1 variety is most suitable in Dhanbad region, as it is adapted to both low temperatures and local soil.
According to Dr. Srivastava, proper preparation of the field and fertilizer management is very important for good production. He told that in the cultivation of one acre of mustard, it is necessary to give 20 kg nitrogen, 16 kg phosphorus and 10 kg potash. Along with these, 8 kg sulfur should also be used compulsorily. Availability of sulfur improves the quality of mustard seeds and also increases the oil content. Regular monitoring of plants along with proper irrigation and weed control further increases production.
With good technical management, farmers can yield about 6 to 7 quintals of mustard in one acre. This will not only increase the income of farmers but will also strengthen oilseed production in the state. Both mustard oil and cake are important for many industries, hence its market price also remains stable and profitable.
According to government data, a target has been set to cultivate mustard in about 220 hectares of land in all the blocks of Dhanbad district. The department believes that if farmers adopt scientific methods, this target can be easily achieved and production can also reach record levels.
In these cold days, when yellow flowers bloom in the fields, this sight will not only symbolize the hard work of the farmers but will also tell the story of their economic progress.
