Gumla. In today’s fast-paced life, even educated youth are migrating to other states in search of better employment. They are working at the same risk to their lives. Many times people are losing their lives due to accidents. In such a situation, an illiterate farmer from Gumla has done wonders in farming with his hard work and passion. Roshan Mahato, a resident of Barai village of Basia block of Gumla district, is illiterate but beats even the educated in terms of earning. He is expected to earn Rs 8 lakh from tomato farming.
Cultivating tomatoes using mulching method
Let us tell you that Gumla district falls in tribal dominated and backward area. There are no big industries, businesses, railways, factories etc. here. In such a situation, most of the people here are dependent on farming. In such a situation, despite being illiterate, Roshan Mahato has set an example with his hard work. He told that he has been doing farming since childhood, initially he started farming on a small scale and gradually progressed with experience and now he has cultivated tomatoes by mulching method in only two and a half acres of land.
Estimated profit up to Rs 8 lakh
Farmer Roshan Mahato told Local 18 that he is a resident of Barai village of Basia block of Gumla district. About three months ago, tomatoes were cultivated in two and a half acres of land by mulching method. He further told that about 10,000 tomato plants are planted in this two and a half acre land and the yield has also been very good and looking at the rate of tomato in the market, it seems that the profit will be Rs 7 to 8 lakh.
Trouble due to weather
Some loss is also caused due to bad weather, storm and rain. He said that he had to face the vagaries of weather and heavy losses many times in farming, but never gave up. A few months ago also the crop was ruined but I did not lose courage. He believes that there is no better work than farming. I like this work very much. His story is an inspiration for all those people who are wandering for employment and migrating to other states. His success proves that even if you are illiterate, if you have true dedication and hard work, you can earn good income while staying at your village home.
