We are talking about Iran. The Australian government has not only ordered Iran’s ambassador to leave the country within 7 days, but has also declared the country’s unofficial but most powerful military organization, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, i.e. IRGC, as a terrorist.
This is the first time after the Second World War that Australia has expelled the ambassador of any country. Australia has declared IRGC involved in terrorist activities. This drastic step has been taken at a time when Australian intelligence agencies have found that the IRGC had planned arson attacks last year targeting Australia’s Jewish community.
For which incidents was IRGC held responsible?
In Australia, Lewis’ Continental Kitchen in Sydney was attacked in October 2024 and then Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne was attacked in December 2024. Australia described these incidents as organized terrorist acts. Only after the intelligence report in this matter, IRGC has been declared a terrorist under the new law of Australia. Australia implemented the State Sponsors of Terrorism Act 2025, under which IRGC has become the first organization to be declared a state-supported terrorist organization. Under this, it will now be a crime to work, fund, recruit or have contact with this organization. Violating this can result in a prison sentence of 25 years.
What is IRGC, which America also considers a terrorist?
According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is the most influential institution in Iran, which holds control over the country’s military, internal security and economy. It was established in the year 1979 and it works like the army. It reports directly to the Supreme Leader of Iran and commands the Quds Force. It also manages Iran’s missile program, while working closely with organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. Declaring IRGC a terrorist means that relations between Iran and Australia have reached a historically low level. This step is in coordination with the policies of America and Europe because America has already declared IRGC as Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). A peaceful country like Australia taking such a step signals to countries around the world that there will be more strictness on Iran’s activities.
