Bisi Bele Bath is a traditional and very popular dish of Karnataka. Its name itself tells that this dish is made of garam (Bisi), pulses (Bele) and rice (Bath). It is sweet, sour, spicy and nutritious food, which gives warmth to the body in winter. Apart from this, this dish is liked by everyone in the house from children to elders. Ingredients
Main Ingredients:
Rice – 1 cup
Toor dal – ½ cup
Tamarind water – 2 tbsp
BC Bele Bhaat Masala – 2 tbsp (from market or home made)
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Salt – as per taste
Water – 4-5 cups
Vegetables:
Carrot – ½ cup (chopped)
Beans – ½ cup
Peas – ¼ cup
Tomato – 1 (chopped)
For tempering:
Ghee – 2 tbsp
Mustard – ½ tsp
Curry leaves – 8-10
Dry red chilli – 2
Asafoetida – a pinch
Cashews – 8-10
Method of making
Cook rice and dal:
Wash rice and toor dal, add turmeric and water in a pressure cooker and cook until soft.
Cook Vegetables:
Boil carrots, beans, peas and tomatoes lightly.
Mix tamarind water and masala:
Put boiled vegetables in a big pan, add tamarind water and BC Bele Bhaat masala. Cook for 5-7 minutes.
Mix rice and dal:
Now add cooked rice and lentils into it. If necessary, add some water to make consistency like khichdi. Adjust salt.
Add tempering:
Heat ghee in a small pan. Prepare tadka by adding mustard seeds, curry leaves, dry red chilli, asafoetida and cashew nuts. Put it on BC Bele Bhaat.
How to serve?
Serve hot Bisi Bele Bhaat with papad, raita or boondi. Adding some ghee on top further enhances the taste.
