Dhaka: Even after expelling Sheikh Hasina from Bangladesh, if she did not give in, she has been sentenced to death. Under Yunus’ rule, preparations are being made to hang Sheikh Hasina and meanwhile another shocking news has come to light. According to media reports, 10 kg of gold has been stolen from the bank account of the deposed Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The price of this gold is said to be around 1.3 million dollars i.e. around Rs 11 crore. Bangladesh officials confirmed this on Wednesday.
What is the inside story?
According to AFP, officials of the Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the National Board of Revenue said that Sheikh Hasina’s lockers were confiscated in September, which when opened were found to contain huge amounts of gold. “Following the court order, we opened the lockers and recovered about 9.7 kilograms of gold belonging to the former prime minister,” a senior CIC official told AFP on condition of anonymity. The recovered items include gold coins, gold bars and gold jewellery.
Preparation to impose a new charge on Sheikh Hasina
Investigators said that Sheikh Hasina had not deposited some of the gifts received while serving as Prime Minister in the state treasury i.e. Toshakhana as per the law. After which the National Board of Revenue is now also investigating the alleged tax evasion in this case and is finding out whether Hasina had declared the recovered gold in her tax returns or not?
ready to hang
Bangladesh has been facing political instability since the end of Hasina’s rule, and violence has marred the campaign for elections scheduled for February 2026. Earlier this month, the International Criminal Tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in connection with the deadly crackdown against a student-led rebellion. The United Nations says that up to 1,400 people were killed in this crackdown while trying to remain in power.
