Jhansi. Indian Railways is running a campaign against those who pull chains unnecessarily in trains and strict action is being taken against them. In a special operation conducted by Jhansi Division of North Central Railway from April 1 to November 15, 1603 passengers were caught, who did not give any valid reason. A total penalty of Rs 4,79,470 was collected from these.
Joint teams of Railway Protection Force and Commerce Department conducted surprise checking in trains. The passengers who were found pulling the chain without any reason were immediately arrested and a case was registered under relevant sections of the Railway Act. In most of the cases, people used to pull the chain to get down at small stations, to pick up or drop their friends or to smoke cigarettes.
DRM Anirudh Kumar said that due to unnecessary chain pulling, a train gets delayed by at least 20-30 minutes. Due to this, other trains on the entire line are affected, fuel is wasted and safety is also at risk. We have adopted a policy of zero tolerance. In Jhansi division, apart from Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Chennai main line, there are busy routes like Jhansi-Kanpur, Jhansi-Gwalior, Jhansi-Manikpur, Lalitpur-Bina. Hundreds of mail-express and goods trains pass here every day. Even a single unnecessary chain pulling starts a chain reaction that lasts for hours.
Railways has given a clear warning that no leniency will be shown in such cases in future too. If found guilty, immediate arrest and a fine of at least Rs 1000 is mandatory. In some cases, there can be a jail sentence of up to 6 months. The railway administration has appealed to all passengers to pull the alarm chain only in case of real emergency (illness, fire, accident). Unnecessary pulling not only puts you in trouble but also wastes the precious time of thousands of co-passengers. Now CCTV footage is also being checked in every coach, so that no one pulling the chain can escape.
