According to Ayurveda, starting children’s day on the right path has a deep impact on their brain development, memory and focus. Drinking lukewarm water on an empty stomach in the morning detoxifies the body, activates metabolism and improves the flow of oxygen to the brain, due to which children remain more energetic and focused throughout the day.
Children’s brain learns very fast, but for this it needs the right start and the right environment. Morning time is considered to be the cleanest, calmest and most effective for the mind. Even in Ayurveda, morning has been described as an intelligence-enhancing time, when the brain grasps new things quickly and remembers them for a long time. The good thing is that there is no need for any heavy routine to sharpen the memory of children. Just a few small morning habits can improve their brain, attention and learning ability in a natural way.
The first and most effective habit is to give lukewarm water and a date to the child in the morning. After sleeping overnight, the body and mind become slightly dehydrated, so hydration is necessary first thing in the morning. Lukewarm water gradually activates the children’s system and also makes digestion easy. The natural glucose present in dates gives instant energy to the brain, due to which the child is able to focus more on studies in the morning. Many parents give milk or tea in the morning, which can be heavy for some children. In comparison, water and dates are considered a light, simple and healthy start. This routine is perfect for children above 5 years of age.
The second habit is to look at the mild morning sunlight for 2–3 minutes. This is not strong sunlight, but soft and natural morning light, which activates the eyes and brain in a very natural way. Research shows that natural morning sunlight improves mood, reduces stress and increases the alertness level of the brain. When children spend time in a little sunlight, their attention gets set quickly and their mind also gets ready for studies quickly. This very simple habit gradually strengthens their concentration and learning abilities.
The third habit is just 5 minutes of brain yoga, in which Nadi Shodhan and Brahmari Pranayam can be included. Nadi Shodhan creates balance between the two parts of the brain and improves oxygen flow. The humming sound of Brahmari calms the mind and increases mental clarity. This little practice keeps children calm, focused and ready to learn throughout the day. This morning practice is very beneficial for children who are very hyper or get irritable quickly.
According to Ayurveda, the mind and body of children are considered to be Kapha dominant, hence the warmth of the morning, natural light and light yoga improve their mental balance. From a scientific point of view, morning hydration, sunlight and yoga make the brain fresh, active and ready to learn in a better way. By including these three simple habits in the daily routine, amazing improvement can be seen in children’s memory, focus and brain development.
