8th Pay Commission: The government has issued rules for making the 8th Pay Commission, but the biggest problem is that it is not written anywhere in it as to when the new salary and pension will be implemented. Till now, a new pay commission comes every ten years. The time of the 7th commission is ending on 31 December 2025, so government employees and pensioners are worried that the government might delay it. In such a situation, the unions have put forward 7 demands before the government.
The government has issued rules for the 8th Pay Commission, but it is not clearly written in it as to when the new salary-pension will be available. Till now, a new commission has been coming every 10 years and the time of the 7th commission is ending on 31 December 2025. Everyone felt that the 8th Commission would start from January 1, 2026, but since the date was not written, there was tension among the employees that there might be a delay.
Now big employees unions and pensioners organizations have united. Defense Employees Federation, Central Employees Union and Bharat Pensioners Society have written letters to Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Everyone is saying that there should be clarity about when the 8th Pay Commission will be implemented. Bharat Pensioners Samaj (BPS) and other unions have told the government that they want seven major changes in the ToR.
The first major demand is that it should be clearly written that the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission will come into effect from January 1, 2026, because currently there is no mention of the date in the TOR.

The third demand has been made that the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) should be restarted for 26 lakh employees recruited after 2004. Unions say that the New Pension Scheme (NPS) has increased insecurity, hence it should be removed and OPS should be brought back.
The fourth demand is that the 8th Pay Commission should examine the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), New Pension Scheme (NPS) and Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) together and do a complete evaluation. The unions demand that all three systems should be reviewed in depth together.
The fifth demand is to implement the same pension rules for all pensioners. This will end discrimination between old and new pensioners.
The sixth demand of the union is to include employees of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), autonomous bodies and statutory institutions in the 8th Pay Commission as these people are often left out.
Inflation has increased a lot, hence 20% interim relief should be given to the employees immediately. Till the final recommendations come, this increase in salary and pension will have to be given immediately. Apart from this, there are some other demands as well – these include making major reforms in CGHS, opening more and more health centres, providing cashless treatment facility anywhere in the country, soon approving the pending recommendations of the parliamentary committee.
