Farmers of Raigarh district are now making poultry farming a strong source of income along with traditional farming. Farmers are significantly increasing their income by adopting poultry farming along with crops like oilseeds and pulses. Farmer Krishna Yadav of Jhalmala village is a successful example of this, who is earning up to Rs 50 thousand every month.
Bring chicks from the market and rear them
Krishna Yadav tells that he buys chicks from the market and rears them. Adopting proper care and low-cost technology has made poultry farming profitable.
Use of Azolla grass up to 70% instead of grains
To reduce the expenditure on feed for chicks, Krishna Yadav is adopting a special method. He gives only 30% feed to the chicks. Whereas 70% use Azolla grass. By cultivating Azolla themselves, they save a lot in the cost of purchasing grains. He had obtained this grass from the Agricultural Science Centre.
First 10 days are most important
According to Krishna, chicks need special care in the first 10 days after birth. During this time, they are given protein and vitamin rich grains, which reduces the risk of disease. The farmer says that just as a newborn baby needs more care in the initial days, similarly the chicks also need attention in the initial days.
Chick is available for Rs 25-30
Krishna Yadav tells that a chick is available in the market for Rs 25-30. With proper care it grows to 700–800 grams in 75 days. It weighs about 1 kg in 90 days. In the wholesale market, chicken is sold at the rate of Rs 250 per kg, whereas in the local market it is sold for Rs 300-400 per kg.
Poultry farming is becoming a better source of income
Due to low cost and high profits, poultry farming is now becoming a strong income source for farmers. Krishna Yadav’s success proves that efforts made with technology and wisdom can change the economic condition of a farmer.
