Now this research is being taken forward. In this direction, the research being done by Australia’s Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology has brought out promising results. Biotechnologist Professor Chamindi Punyadira is leading this study. In a landmark study published in 2012, Punyadeera’s team demonstrated that NT-proBNP could be reliably measured in saliva. In their research, it was found that the sensitivity to distinguish between heart failure patients and healthy individuals was 82 percent and the specificity was 100 percent. Another group then used multi-protein profiling and discovered a set of proteins in saliva that showed clear differences between heart failure patients and healthy individuals. Of the nearly 800 proteins analyzed, four proteins were selected that detected the early stages of heart failure with about 83 percent sensitivity.
Identification of three types of biomarkers
In 2019, the systolic heart failure diagnostic analysis done by Punyadira’s team was also published in a journal. In this study they identified a panel of three key proteins, including S100-A7 and cathelicidin. These could identify patients with about 81.6% diagnostic accuracy. According to the study, the protein galectin-3 found in saliva is associated with the processes of inflammation and fibrosis. This protein can play an important role in the prediction of heart failure. According to this research published in PubMed Central, when this biomarker was identified in more than 100 patients, most of them were admitted to the hospital due to heart related problems or had incidents of heart failure.
