Araria: Araria district of Bihar is known for the cultivation of maize on a large scale, whose land proves to be extremely suitable for this crop. This is the reason why most of the farmers here have a keen interest in maize cultivation and a large part of their income depends on this crop.
Parmanand Yadav, a farmer from Raniganj block, who has been farming for the last 15 years, said that he is growing maize on about 3 acres of land this season. He informed that the cost of cultivating maize ranges from ₹ 25,000 to ₹ 35,000 per acre, but it gives a profit of ₹ 60,000 to ₹ 80,000 per acre. Maize is the most profitable crop for the farmers of Araria, which is ready in about 150 to 180 days.
Proper management of irrigation and fertilizer
Proper management of irrigation is very important in maize crop. Farmer Harichand Singh said that depending on the moisture level in the soil, irrigation may be required 4 to 6 times. According to Parmanand Yadav, if there is less moisture in the soil then it becomes mandatory to irrigate 4 to 6 times.
Along with irrigation, use of correct fertilizer is also important. Farmers use chemical fertilizers like DAP, urea, potash and aluminum in this crop. Apart from this, when the crop is 35 to 45 days old, it is also very important to spray insecticides and essential chemicals like Lodis twice.
Earning millions from maize
Farmer Parmanand Yadav told that by cultivating maize on only 3 acres of land, he earns around ₹ 2 lakh to more than ₹ 3 lakh. Combined with the cultivation of maize, wheat and paddy, he earns a profit of about ₹5 lakh per season every year, which shows that maize cultivation done scientifically is a very profitable business for the farmers of Araria.
