Siwan: Siwan district of Bihar is a wonderful confluence of history, heritage and education. VMHE School (Victoria Memorial English High School) established in Siwan city. This school, built by the British in 1901, is completing its 125th year today. The special thing is that even after more than a century has passed, its ancient building still stands strong holding its heritage.
When the Local 18 team took stock of this school, its history, architecture and rich tradition of education revealed its own story.
The first British era school in the district
Principal in-charge of the school, Rakesh Kumar Singh, says that this school is the first school not only in Siwan but also in the surrounding areas which was established during the British rule. This building built by British engineers stands so strongly that even after 125 years its structure is almost the same as it was in the beginning.
He proudly says that I completed my higher education from this school and today I am the principal of this institute. This is a matter of pride for me.
Huge campus spread over 13 acres
The school campus is spread over 13 acres, making it one of the largest school campuses in the district. The campus comprises of spacious play grounds, clean courtyards and a total of 35 classrooms. Here only boys study till class 10th, whereas at intermediate level both boys and girls enroll. 1300 students have been enrolled in this session.
Principal Rakesh says that the biggest feature of this building is its construction style. The technology and quality with which the British made it is visible even today. Only painting and general repairs are required from time to time, whereas today’s new constructions do not last even 40-50 years.
The school still preserves its identity
Anil Kumar says that today’s buildings do not last even 50 years, but this British era building of ours has been standing strong for 125 years. This is an example in itself.
Symbol of historical heritage of Siwan
Victoria Memorial English High School is not just an educational institution but is an important part of the cultural and historical identity of Siwan. This school was established by the British at the time when modern education was starting in India. In the last one century, this school has given education to thousands of students and has given capable citizens to the society.
Even today one can feel the glimpse of British era architecture by looking at the old walls, high ceilings and ancient architecture of the school. The campus surrounded by old trees and huge playing fields give it the look of a heritage site.
