Jaipur of India is famous all over the world as “Pink City”. In 1876, Maharaja Ram Singh had the entire city painted pink to welcome Queen Victoria. But do you know that there is a city in the world where every building, every road, every footpath, even the bus stops and lamp posts are as white as milk?
Yes, we are talking about Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, which is also known as “White Marble City” or “White City”. As soon as the sun rises, the whole city starts shining. It is so white that one cannot stand in the sun even for 5 minutes without goggles. Foreign tourists say that when they come here for the first time, it seems as if someone has covered the entire city with a sheet of marble. The eyes dazzle in this city. The special thing is that only white colored vehicles are allowed to drive here. Black, red, blue, green – if any other vehicle is seen on the road, the police immediately arrests it and imposes a heavy fine.

In 2018, the then President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov had given a clear order that only white vehicles would run in the capital. Lakhs of people started trying to get their cars painted white overnight. After all, why so much obsession with white color? Let us tell you that former President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was the first dentist. People jokingly say that the dentist was fond of keeping his teeth white, and when he became President, he whitened the entire city. He completely changed Ashgabat since 2000. Old Soviet style buildings were demolished and gleaming white marble buildings were erected in their place. Today, more than 550 buildings in the city are made of white marble. The largest amount of white marble is used here in the world. For this reason the name of the city is also recorded in the Guinness Book.
This city is very special
There are some special things about this city. Like here is the world’s tallest flagpole (133 meters), that too white in colour. It also has the largest indoor Ferris wheel and it is inside a white marble building. There is a gold statue on the Independence Memorial, and everything else is white. The city shines so much at night that it is visible even from space. Tourists certainly find this city beautiful but it also seems a bit strange. The roads are wide, but there are less people to be seen. The entire city looks as if you have arrived on a film set.
