Jharkhand 4 Forest Areas Bird Hotspots: IITDO team will conduct scientific survey to make Netarhat, Betla National Park, Dalma Sanctuary and Sahebganj of Jharkhand as bird hotspots from January 2026, which will increase tourism and conservation.
The land of Jharkhand has always been known for its greenery, peaceful environment and bio-diversity. Now preparations are being made to give a new identity to this natural wealth. A major step is being taken towards making 4 major forest areas of the state, Netarhat, Betla National Park, Dalma Sanctuary and Sahebganj area, as ‘Bird Hotspot’. Here, for the first time, birds will be counted and studied on a scientific scale, which will have an impact on both tourism and environmental protection in the future.
The responsibility of this ambitious campaign has been given to the expert team of IITDO. The team will start the survey from January 2026 and will stay for about 8-10 days in each sanctuary to record the presence of birds, migration patterns, number of species and their behaviour. This study will be prepared on the basis of international standards, due to which Jharkhand can get a new identity on the global bird-watching map.
The state tourism department has sought cooperation from the administration of the four districts Jamshedpur, Sahebganj, Latehar and Gumla. According to officials, the survey team will be provided uninterrupted facilities, security and field support. The department believes that this project will not only help in environmental protection but will also increase eco-tourism in rural areas, which will open new avenues of employment for the local people.

Areas like Dalma and Betla receive dozens of migratory birds from colder regions of Europe and Asia during the winter season. Whom the local people also call ‘foreign guests’. These include many colorful and rare species like gray leg goose, pintail duck, brahminy duck, coot, teal, heron, egret and kingfisher. Scientific survey will be of great help in understanding the exact number of these birds, their favorite places and the environment required by them.
Experts are hopeful that this project will strengthen Jharkhand as a center of global bird tourism. On the basis of scientific reports, the government will be able to prepare new conservation plans and develop safe habitats for birds. Besides, new opportunities for bird-watching trails, nature walks and environmental education will also open up in these sanctuaries.
