Sprouted Potatoes: Potatoes are used in every household to make different types of dishes. We often see sprouts appearing on potatoes, even when we are about to use them. But should we avoid eating sprouted potatoes?
Sprouted Potatoes: Potatoes are available in almost every house. Be it a potato dish or something else, there are countless ways to make potatoes. One thing you will notice about potatoes is that they sprout sprouts, and if we want to use them, we use them again. However, experts say that sprouted potatoes should not be eaten. Let us know about it in detail…
According to experts, if potatoes remain exposed to light, heat or certain things for a long time, some poisonous substances naturally form in them. These substances are called glycoalkaloids. Two of these, solanine and chaconine, are considered particularly dangerous. The green color of the potato or its color changing is an indication that the level of these poisonous substances has increased.
The effect of eating sprouted or raw potatoes can be seen within a few hours. Initially, one may feel heaviness in the stomach, burning sensation and nausea. After this, vomiting, stomach ache and diarrhea may occur. Some people may also experience dizziness, headache and extreme fatigue. In severe cases, fever, dehydration and effects on the nervous system may also occur. The risks are more serious for young children, the elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions.

Many people believe that roasting, frying or cooking potatoes thoroughly removes their poison. However, this is a big misconception. Toxic compounds like solanine do not disappear completely even at high temperatures. Therefore, sprouted or green potatoes can be harmful to health even after cooking. This is the reason why nutritionists and doctors refuse to eat such potatoes.
But this does not mean that you should throw away the potatoes. Sprouted potatoes are not edible, but you can use them in other ways. A sprout is the beginning of a new plant. You can grow new potatoes at home. Cut the potatoes into 2-3 pieces. Each piece should have at least one sprout. Let them dry in the shade for a day. Then plant them about 3-4 inches deep in the soil. You will have new potatoes in 2-3 months.
