tradition going on for many years
Atta Bank is an initiative of village women. She has been collecting flour for 20 years. The women of the village fix a day for this. On that day every woman brings one or two handfuls of flour from her home. Small lumps of flour come together to fill the sack. These sacks are their flour bank.

How is security?
This is the first bank which has neither any guard, nor police nor any lock or key for its security. Its security comes from the mutual trust and cooperation of the village. If someone falls ill or someone’s crop gets spoiled and he does not have food to eat, then he can take flour for free from this flour bank.

Why started Atta Bank?
The elders of the village say that the flour bank was started about 20 years ago. There was drought in Babatmau for three consecutive years, due to which there was not even food left in many houses. Then some women of the village decided that they would help the people and no one would sleep hungry. Then I started collecting flour little by little. The tradition that started from then continues till today.

Atta Bank has become an example for the new generations. When village children see their mothers taking care not only of the family but of the entire village, they themselves are inspired to do the same. These children themselves come many times to collect flour. Just seeing this shows that the new generation is learning to be kind. Rajni, also a resident of the village, says that when I contribute to the flour bank, I feel as if I am a direct partner in satisfying someone’s hunger.
