Chandan Kumar Singh of Arwal district of Bihar, who had once commanded a ship on the waves of the vast ocean, had probably never thought even in his dreams. One day his life will be confined to the four walls of a foreign jail 14 thousand kilometers away. This story is not just about one person, but about the human struggle, where circumstances try their best to break a person. Courage refuses to accept defeat. Chandan was working as a ship captain in a logistics company. He got this job after studies and long struggle. He was working on the ship for about one and a half years. One incident changed his entire life.
Chandan Kumar Singh told Local 18 that during Covid-19, he was present on a cargo ship, which had left for Brazil. On the way near Venezuela, some armed people boarded the ship along with the ship’s owner. He had a huge quantity of drugs. They intimidated the people present on the ship and got them involved in this work. At that time the situation was such that no one was in a position to protest.
400 kg drugs found in the ship
The ship was intercepted in Trinidad and Tobago before it could reach Brazil. During the investigation, about 400 kg of drugs were recovered from the ship, whose government value was estimated to be around $475 million. After this, a total of 26 people present on the ship were arrested. In which Chandan Kumar Singh was also included. Chandan told that his experience was very difficult. He never imagined that he would have to go to jail without any mistake. He remained confined in a small room of the jail for about 4 years and 8 months. Every day we got two breads, half-cooked rice and vegetables like water to eat. He was a vegetarian, so he had more problems regarding food.
26 people arrested
The biggest problem was that his case did not reach the court for almost four years. During this time, he was constantly afraid that he might spend his entire life in jail. According to the law there, there is a provision of death penalty in case of drugs in such large quantity. Amidst this fear, he took care of himself every day. Chandan told that his family fully supported him in this difficult time. The family fought a legal battle from India itself and spent around Rs 7 lakh and hired a lawyer so that their case could reach the court. During investigation it became clear that there was no evidence against Chandan. After this he was dishonorably acquitted.
