Police station in-charge Suraj Kumar says that he got information about the incident from the media and now investigation is being started. It has been said that action will be taken after receiving the application. But the question of the villagers is, shouldn’t the crime be stopped even before the crime is reported?
Amit Kumar/Samastipur: These days, nights are covered with strange silence in Vidyapatinagar police station area of Samastipur, Bihar. As darkness deepens, fear begins to descend in the streets of the village. What happened last night in ward number eight of Mau Dhaneshpur North Panchayat took away not only the sleep but also the confidence of the cattle herders. The unknown people who came in a four-wheeler were in police uniform. They knocked on doors and introduced themselves as police. Those calling themselves police said that they were searching for liquor, everyone should go inside. What would the villagers do? Who had the courage to question the uniform? People went into their homes and the goats tied outside were left to their fate. Within a few minutes, six goats were loaded into the cart and the thieves disappeared into the darkness. Here the uniform became not an assurance of law and security but a symbol of crime.
Not goats, trust has been stolen
In this strange theft, a total of six goats of Rehana Khatoon, Rampukar Rai and Haseena Khatoon were stolen. The value of the stolen goats is said to be more than one lakh rupees. Earlier, similar incidents had happened in the same village on 9th December and in Sherpur Panchayat on 12th December. That means the fourth incident in 10 days. The method of thieves is almost the same, coming late at night, targeting the cattle herders living on the roadside and calling themselves police when people wake up. Two goats each of Mohammad Jalaluddin and Rehana Khatoon, whose price was said to be Rs 20,000 per goat, also fell victim to this theft. Here the question is not just about the goats, the question is about the trust that people had on the administration and the police uniforms. Now the same uniform is scaring people.
A long night of fear, resentment and waiting
There is an atmosphere of fear among the cattle herders due to the continuous incidents. People have started waking up at night, but the fear is that when they wake up they might find the police standing there. Dissatisfaction with the administration is also clearly visible among the local people. Police station in-charge Suraj Kumar says that he got information about the incident from the media and now investigation is being started. It has been said that action will be taken after receiving the application. But the question of the villagers is, shouldn’t the crime be stopped even before the crime is reported? These nights of Vidyapati Nagar are no longer just telling the story of theft, but are also highlighting the strange irony where criminals are making fun of the law by wearing uniforms and common people are waiting for the next morning in the shadow of fear.
