Guwahati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a road show in Guwahati on Saturday evening, the first day of his two-day visit to Assam, and observed the state’s diverse cultural offerings. The road show started from outside the Arjun Bhogeshwar Barua Sports Complex at Sarusajai on National Highway 27 and ended at the state BJP headquarters near Basistha Chariyali.
Modi, sitting at the front in a black SUV, was seen waving towards the excited crowd gathered on both sides of the road. Slogans of ‘Modi ji zindabad’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ were echoing all around. Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma, Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Dilip Saikia participated in the road show in their respective vehicles.
The road show was a demonstration of the BJP’s strength in Assam, where assembly elections are due early next year. The event saw a strong presence of BJP workers and volunteers, who worked hard to ensure a grand welcome for the Prime Minister.
Many stages were set up on the roadside for the performances of artists coming from different parts of the state. The party’s state media coordinator Dhrub Jyoti Maral said, “We tried to present a cultural display of dance, songs and musical instruments of the original castes and tribes.” He claimed that more than 50,000 people gathered to watch the road show organized amid heavy security arrangements.
