In Churchu block of Hazaribagh, Rajendra Tudu has promoted modern farming by becoming an inspiration for farmers by earning more than Rs 6 lakh annually from nursery business.
Hazaribagh: With the changing times, the nature of farming is also changing rapidly. Whereas earlier farmers were limited to only traditional farming, now they are rapidly moving towards modern technology and commercial farming. This is the reason that today agriculture is not only a means of livelihood, but is also becoming a strong source of profit. Churchu block of Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand is a great example of this, which is known for advanced and commercial farming in the entire state.
Vegetables and other crops are cultivated on a large scale in Churchu block. For this reason, nursery business is also flourishing rapidly here. Rajendra Tudu, a progressive farmer living in the same area, has transformed farming into a successful enterprise through nursery business. Today, he is earning lakhs of rupees annually through this farming related business and has become an inspiration for the nearby farmers.
This was the beginning
While talking to Local 18 Jharkhand, Rajendra Tudu told that he had started nursery business by joining Churchu Nari Urja Farmer Producer Company. Initially the resources were limited, due to which he started the work of preparing a nursery for vegetable plants by setting up a polyhouse on only 5 katha of land. Gradually, when the demand of farmers started increasing and their work showed profits, they expanded their business. Today he is growing saplings of different types of crops through polyhouse in about 20 katha of land.
In Rajendra Tudu’s nursery, plants are grown from seeds of almost all types of vegetables. Here farmers can directly buy plants, while many farmers also donate their seeds, from which quality plants are prepared and given back to them. Due to this, farmers get strong and healthy plants for good yield, which also increases their income.
Earning more than 6 lakhs annually
Along with nursery business, Rajendra Tudu also produces grafted plants. For this he has received special training. In this process, a grafted plant is prepared by attaching the stem of another improved variety of crop to the strong root of one crop. Such plants are considered high producing and disease resistant, which have good demand in the market.
Rajendra Tudu says that he is earning more than Rs 6 lakh annually from the business of nursery and grafted plants. He believes that if farmers adopt modern technology and business thinking along with traditional farming, then farming is no less than a big business. Today Rajendra Tudu has not only become self-reliant, but is also inspiring other farmers to adopt advanced farming and nursery business.
