Budget 2026: According to parliamentary traditions, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman may present the general budget for the next financial year 2026-27 on Sunday. The reason for this is that since 2017, the budget is being presented continuously on 1st February and next year 1st February is falling on Sunday.
However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has clarified that such decisions are taken by the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs and the decision is taken at the right time. Modi government had started the tradition of presenting the budget on 1st February, so that the budget could be implemented before the new financial year i.e. 1st April.
Budget presentation will be special on Sunday
In the year 2026, if the budget is presented by the Finance Minister on 1 February, it will be special, because perhaps for the first time the general budget will be presented on a Sunday. The case of presenting the budget on Sunday has not been seen in the last few years.
In the last few years, there have been two such occasions when the general budget has been presented on Saturday. In the year 2015, Arun Jaitley and in the year 2020, Nirmala Sitharaman presented the general budget on 1 February (Saturday). Due to which the stock market was also specially opened.
Budget started being presented on 1st February from 2017
A major change was made in the date of presentation of the general budget from 2017. Before 2017, the general budget was presented on the last day of February. At that time, the government used to get permission for the expenditure of the first three months of the new financial year. Whereas the budget for the entire year was approved later.
In the year 2017, the central government decided to make major changes in it. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley started the tradition of presenting the budget on 1 February from 2017. With this, the budget would get the approval of the Parliament by the end of March, that is, all the processes would be completed before the beginning of the new financial year.
Anyway, Parliament meetings have been held on Sundays on special occasions, such as during the Corona epidemic in 2020 and on the 60th anniversary of the first meeting of Parliament on 13 May 2012.
